How Our Electrolyzer Technology Works

PEM electrolyzers generate hydrogen by splitting water molecules through an electrochemical process called electrolysis. When powered by renewable sources of energy, electrolyzers can produce clean hydrogen for various on-site applications, including industrial feedstock, transportation and power generations. How it Works

  • Step 1

    Water & Electricity as Inputs to the System

    Electricity and city water are the only inputs needed for our PEM electrolyzer system. RO and EDI technologies are first used to purify the water for the electrochemical process (WTS – water treatment process). In parallel, the power supply and control system (PSCS) converts AC electricity into DC for use in running and controlling our electrolyzer cell stack assembly (CSA) system.

  • Step 2

    Hydrogen is Produced

    The purified water and DC electricity is then directly used by the electrochemical cell stack assembly (CSA) within the PEM electrolyzer to produce hydrogen through an electrochemical process called water electrolysis. Our mixed resin beds continuously re-circulate the purified water throughout the process to maintain stack performance, durability, and lifetime.

  • Step 3

    Hydrogen is Purified

    Lastly, the produced hydrogen from the electrochemical cell stacks is dried and can be purified further to 99.999%+ purity through our hydrogen purification system (HPS), which is suitable for use in fuel cells and a variety of compression applications.
